What Types Of Paperboard Boxes Can A Folding Gluing Machine Produce?

Cardboard folding binders produce a range of cardboard boxes, not one type: side-slit tube cartons (straight and back slit clamps), sleeve and cover covers, bumper locks and automatic chassis, boxers and hexagons with dust flaps, and die-cut cartons with extra panels, linings or partitions. What makes each home possible is not the panels, but the folding sections mounted on the machine-a straight-line device that folds and adheres to the a manufacturer's joint, a bottom folding table that adds to the bottom of the bump-proof lock, and a rotating device with a second folding section that creates a carburetor box. Any need to pack a hard shell, corrugated box or film window leaves this machine class completely.

The Folding Sections determines which boxes work

Ask what a cardboard folding adhesive machine can make and give an honest answer beginning with the folding section, as the style is downstream of hardware. Three configurations cover almost all of today's sales.

The linear device folds the left and right flaps to 180 degrees and binds a narrow tie-in-the the manufacturer's joint-to allow the packer to close the end. Add a bottom folding station with a hook, air fingers or vacuum, and the machine can form and lock a bottom as the carton is erected. Add a rotating unit and a second folding, and the blank can fold twice to 180 degrees, which is where the keratin box comes in.

Carton style What must machines be fitted with? Where to use it
Straight Folding Pipes Line segment, glue head 1; Food, Hardware, Cosmetics
Reverse foldingend Straight, die-cut folding flaps Pharma, candy
Sleeves, open at both ends Straight line, narrow panel Two-piece set
Automatic reverselock Bottom station with hook or air Confectionery, e-commerce
Bottom 1-2-3 Bottom stand, wider bottom panel Catering services
Quads and hexagons Rotation plus second fold Cosmetics, alcohol, drugs
Fifth floor panels, linings, partitions Extra glue head and panel folder Booker-style specials

Side-Seam, Tuck-End and Sleeve Cartons

baseline family requires minimal hardware: a glue lap, everything else off after manual or packing machine. The only difference between a straight-edge carton and a reverse-end carton is which end has the hinge, and the sleeve is the same blank, with no hinge at all.

Two dimensions determine how well they run. The width of the glue lap is usually 10–15 mm, and the seams below 10-15mm depend entirely on the accuracy of the beads. Too narrow seams are a common cause of seams bursting during filling. The cut in the folding flap was 0.5-1mm narrower than the panel they enter, and the folding channel has to remain glue-free-if a bead entered the channel, the carton would be locked before it could be filled.

The sleeve of lid and base is the same geometric shape. Running both parts on one machine is a matter of tool and second pass, not a different machine.

Crash-Lock and automatic chassis

Here, the machine can survive, and here, the choice of plate is as important as tooling. When the carton is upright, the bottom folding table folds the bottom panel and joins the lock, so the packer receives a box that only needs to be opened and filled.

A crunchy bottom requires stiffness: 250–400 gsm is the usual range of work, with heavier grades reserved for products that genuinely need them. Grain direction should be parallel to the crease at the bottom, otherwise the bottom will slouch and the lock will never fit properly. The geometry of the crease determines the rest, the three-point crease with the correct width. The thickness of the plate is measured to ISO 534, and the crease is predictable, while the dry plate has shallow crease cracks and heavy crease decolletage.

There is a floor about size. The base of a 1-2-3 usually requires a base of at least 35–40 mm to be locked repeatedly, so very small boxes tend to move to simpler models rather than smaller machines.

Box with a Dust Flaps for quarters and hexagons

Angular adhesives are forms that separate one structure from another: cardboard folding adhesives only produce angular adhesives when a rotating unit and a second folding section are installed. The carton is not long seam, but is fixed in each corner with short glue lines, these weld seams are the gain and loss of quality.

The control variable is die-cutting accuracy, not machine speed. A half-millimeter angle at the back of the fold appears in the form of an open angle, and the same error is not visible on a straight cardboard box. Dust flaps - small panels that close the top and bottom - need to be roughly 12 to 15 millimeters wide to be picked up reliably by folders, so designers who shave to save board will find machines skip them.

According to ISO 2493-1, the stiffness of the board, as measured by bending resistance, specifies the number of times the carton can be folded at 180° before the outer ply fades. This style dominates the secondary packaging of cosmetics, spirits and medicines for the same reason: closed boxes are what customers see.

Fifth Panels, gasket, diaphragm and Tear Strips

Outstation purchase features. A fifth panel transformed the carton into a booklike package with individual sheets but no separate inserts. The lining or double walls increase compression strength. Split gluing creates splits in multiple packets. Tear strips and tampering are noticeable when cut into molds, but glued to the machine.

With each addition of a glue head or folding attachment, this means capital and, more importantly, a longer changeover and a larger pattern to verify. The practical rule is that the less glue lines a style requires, the more the rated speed of the machine can be saved for actual output.

Window patching are sometimes considered part of this list. This is not the case: coating the window aperture is a stand-alone machine, and in most factories it occurs before the blank reaches the gluer.

What this machine class can't make

A Paperboard Folding Gluing Machine are usually assumed to cover each carton, arriving as a flat blank. There are three things to know before you buy.

Rigid, set-up boxes was wrapped, not sewn. The chipboard shell forms in a corner and the paper glues to it-different physics, different machines.

Corrugated shipping cases are elsewhere. The foldable 3mm sandwich board and the foldable 180° carton foldable foldable are a separate mechanical issue that has its own tolerances, which is why a standard corrugated carton style catalogue is different from a foldable carton catalogue.

Thin-filmwindow cartons and formwork cartons with curved glue seam also usually leave the machine; during the design phase, hand-glued or curved seams are avoided. Very small cardboard boxes are also not made on smaller machines-they run multiple lanes on the same machine, which is how tiny medical cartons are made.

Format, Board Grade and requirements

Style Usual board grade What can go wrong when you specify wrong?
Side Seam Tube 200–400 gsm filling line seams open.
Crash-proof lock bottom 250–400 gsm, along creased textures Lazy bottoms, broken locks
Bottom 1-2-3 300–450 gsm Base bulges during load bearing
Quads and hexagons 250–400 gsm, constant stiffness Fold back and open corners.
Fifth panel, liner Internal 250 – 350 gsm The lining stained the wrinkled road
Multi-lane small cartons 200–300 gsm Miseating and Doubles

Machine format is another boundary. On compact machines, the blank length is usually between 60mm and 600mm, the width of the wide machine is over 1200mm, the die-cutting tolerance is close to ±0.5 mm, and the crease position tighter. These numbers, not style names, determine whether a design works.

Specify a list of styles rather than styles

A paperboard folding machines rarely buy a box. It's worth asking if it can run your list: how many distinct die-cuts you have, how many people sit in the back each year, and how long it takes to convert each time.

A single linear unit with a bottom station usually contains 15 of the 20 styles in a real directory. The ones that remain tend to be cheaper than tools, as each replacement of the machine's life pays for each additional stop.

Before signing, send your die-cut drawings for minimalpanel and ring checks, ask for a pattern drawing for each style of glue and run your own blank test. Then count the number of outfits you actually need-this number, rather than the speed of the quote, is needed for the daily production schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a machine make both a crash lock and a boxer?

Yes, if it comes with a bottom folding station and a cornering device with a second folding section. Linear machines can be modified with some of this, but the geometry of the fold is the deciding factor, not the control system.

Which board grades are realistic?

Folding cardboard from about 200 to 450 gsm covers most of the work, and heavier grades are possible when matched with creases and moulds. Multi-ply and corrugated boards belong to different kinds of machine.

Do trays and lids and pedestals need a second machine?

Flat covers for the coverand base can be glued to the same machine with additional tooling. Forming a three-dimensional tray from a flat blank is usually done in front of the tray, which is more quickly converted into a shallow tray.
